ZARA shoppers in Ireland will face new fees from today when shopping in-store and online.

The major retailer has introduced a fee for paper bags and envelopes.

Customers will be charged 15 cents for a paper bag or 25 cents for each envelope they use.

Zara says it hopes the move will encourage customers to use reusable bags when shopping and said the money will be reinvested in social and environmental work.

A notice in Zara stores today read: “Please note that from May 23, 2022, ZARA will charge 15 cents for each of our 100% recycled paper bags and 25 cents for each envelope.

“The equivalent value of the proceeds will be fully invested in social and environmental initiatives.

An Irish customer has already discovered the unexpected charge for himself.

Taking to social media, they said: ‘I just bought something from Zara and was asked if I wanted to pay 15 cents for a paper bag. Wtf.’

Earlier this month, Zara customers were shocked by yet another new charge.

People wishing to return unwanted items to the store will now be slapped with a €1.95 charge.

Zara customers could previously return items to the popular retail company free of charge by bringing them to the post office or drop-off point.

UK shoppers will also face the new charge and their orders will cost £1.95 to return.

And while the company will still allow free in-store returns, many said it would mean increased waiting times for those who already face long queues at all six stores in Ireland.

Zara’s policy stated: “You can return your order for free to any Zara store in the same market/region where you made the purchase.

“You just need to present the purchase receipt with the items you want to return. You can keep it on your mobile phone, print it or show your ZARA QR, which you will find by going to the “Purchases” section of the ZARA app.

“Remember that you do not need to make a return request through the site or app for in-store returns.
