Sun, 12 Sep 2021 09:02:31 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Tips for finding quality leather bags Sat, 11 Sep 2021 08:21:30 +0000

At FAO, the IT division has expanded its ability to deliver IT solutions by directly sourcing non-staff resources to meet growing demand. This continuous increase in directly recruited resources has become more difficult to manage because it increases the burden of administrative processes. It also poses a challenge in managing and monitoring the progress of deliverables and the relationship with customers. The result we have seen is an exponential increase in the backlog of undelivered solutions, difficulties in meeting the SLAs agreed with customers and a growing demand for additional people. So we recently decided to look for alternative sourcing options such as outsourcing many of our solutions and services to outside companies.

Including outsourcing as a delivery option poses many challenges and we need to analyze various criteria before taking the plunge. In this article, we will discuss some of the key considerations made in the IT division in relation to this transformation.

Below are the three main recognized advantages of moving in this direction:

1. A simpler and faster integration process

It is becoming more and more difficult to find developers, moreover for short missions. In addition to the time needed for recruiting, interviews and negotiations, it also involves many lengthy administrative processes which do not allow to have resources on board quickly, so it is very difficult to leverage our ability to deliver with limited internal resources in a fast paced environment.

In addition, the IT division suffers from significant delays due to administrative overheads (these delays in terms of internal processes and procurement activities for new contracts are an important factor in limiting internal sourcing).

The integration problem is limited in case of external resources, it is enough to have the right supply contracts in place and to place an order accordingly.

2. Easy access to a global talent pool

It can be very difficult to get the right skills from our local pool of resources when a project involves new technologies or when the internal resource identified is already occupied in another project. Outsourcing makes it possible to find the best qualified resources from companies specializing in development, it also gives the possibility of having these resources for the limited duration of the project without the need to train an employee or move a resource from one place to another. project to another. This normally ensures better quality work with a faster response time and a more cost effective approach.

3. Scalability and continuation of work

Scalability is our biggest problem right now. Some projects have short deadlines and require additional development effort. Currently, this is done mainly by prioritizing projects and internally moving resources from one project to another or by bringing in new resources not immediately trained and adapted to the position. Setting up a partnership with a large subcontracting company allows resources to be consumed on demand. We can plan accordingly the number of resources only for the time of the project without worrying about training, recruitment, vacations and illnesses and above all without affecting other projects already started. In fact, it is even possible to continue development while internal resources are sleeping or when the office is closed. This means that our customers can access our services when this was not normally possible,

However, the move to outsourcing could be difficult and it is important to also consider the following:

  • Clear identification of the reasons why we want to move to outsourcing

It is common knowledge that cost reduction is primarily viewed as the primary motivation for outsourcing IT solutions to external vendors, however, in recent years the industry has evolved a lot and many vendors have invested heavily in the quality of their products. services. Our surveys have shown that one of the main drivers of outsourcing is generally economic as subcontractors often offer more competitive prices for the same services at the same quality of service, whereas in the IT division it was not. not the only factor to consider as we also need the ability for staff to focus on more strategic functions while having a portfolio of services provided by contractors.

Going from an internalization model to an outsourcing model can be emotional, it is crucial that this experience takes place in an environment of collaboration and cooperation.

For example, it is generally considered that having the resources in-house makes it possible to adapt to changing requirements much more quickly and dynamically. While this may seem like an advantage, it also introduces many issues such as a reduction in the discipline of providing clear and precise requirements and an appropriate delivery plan.

In preparation for outsourcing, internal resources need to change their mindset and focus on delivering clear, detailed and comprehensive requirements with a clear plan including milestones, deliveries and customer contributions.

  • Communication is essential between internal and external resources

It is important to build the outsourcing capacity on a strong collaboration and partnership with external vendors, investing the appropriate time during the initial stages to ensure that value is then achieved throughout the process.

Outsourcing development is not an easy task, it is a journey that requires clear expectations and great realism on both sides.

The challenge for the CIO today is to build on this experience to take full advantage of the full range of immediate and long-term benefits that outsourcing can bring to a business.

This can take the form of a hybrid model where the outsourcing company sets up a local interface and where internal resources are involved at certain stages of development with the ultimate goal of feeling the owner of the developed product, tests and deployment. It also gives the possibility of maintaining and expanding the product internally. Thus, external resources are used to deliver a product and internal resources retain control and ownership at all stages of the process.

The appeal of leatherless bags Thu, 09 Sep 2021 04:00:50 +0000

Fashion Accessories Updates

While I have a large stash of leather bags like Chanel and Saint Laurent, on the rare occasions I’ve been out at night this year the two bags I’ve worn the most are a small black and white clutch from the polka-dot cotton from Manchester Roop and a gold crochet shoulder bag from Colombian textile studio Verdi. Like many people, I find leather less appealing but also these charming new accessories are further proof that chic bags don’t need to be made from leather, or even leather substitutes.

The demand for vegan bags is increasing. As leather continues to dominate the luxury industry, concerns are growing about the environmental and ethical impact of animal agriculture. Searches for ‘vegan leather’ on the global fashion shopping platform Lyst increased 178%, year over year, with an 81% increase in ‘vegan leather bags’.

“Customers are significantly more interested in alternatives to leather, and the idea that an investment piece should be leather now seems outdated,” says Eleanor Robinson, director of accessories at Selfridges, which stocks Roop. “Over the past few years we’ve seen tote bags and small, non-leather bags become very popular. ”

Roop Recycled Furoshiki Satin Bag, £ 75,

This development does not go unnoticed, even among the big luxury players. This season, Hermès is launching a version of its Victoria bag created in partnership with the Californian MycoWorks, with an alternative to leather made from mycelium, derived from mushrooms. But for those worried about sustainability issues, this isn’t a simple trade-in. As of yet, there is no clear argument that biotech fabrics pose no problem for the environment – plant-based leathers often still rely on chemical processes. And, as far as the vegan customer goes, the new Victoria will also feature calfskin elements.

While leather has traditionally been synonymous with luxury, fabric bags can have an artful feel, often with somewhat quaint associations. When I first met Alexa Chung, probably 15 years ago, she was wearing what looked like an old clip bag, a little printed cotton drawstring style: the kind of idiosyncratic accessory that helped establish Chung. like a pioneer.

“There are so many possibilities with all the amazing fabrics already available,” says Natasha Fernandes Anjo, founder and designer of Roop, which makes bags from recycled satin and cotton (from £ 75,, based on Japanese furoshiki (the brand now offers additional styles), which look like small gifts. The aforementioned Verdi bags (£ 637, available for pre-order, are a high take on the traditional mochila arhuaca. Hand-woven for 10 days, they have a luxury hippie vibe.

London-based brand Shrimps, which started making faux fur jackets, has always made its now cult bags with non-leathers. “I created Shrimps out of love for animals and the need for cruelty-free products in the fashion industry,” says founder Hannah Weiland. “Being ethical and environmentally responsible is such an important part of our design process. ”

His bags have gone from faux fur to soft natural fabrics like velvet or its famous pearl patterns. The Antonia Bag (£ 475,, launched in 2017, is her signature, a square beaded square handbag with two top handles that sells out every season and is featured in the V&A exhibit, Bags: Inside. Out.

The creation of leatherless bags also gives small brands a point of difference with the big luxury brands. London-based designer Molly Goddard introduced leather bags to her Spring / Summer 2019 range, but has since crafted them from brightly colored polyester and cotton, using handcrafted techniques that give a super fun effect and are in keeping with the brand’s signature smocked and gathered clothing.

Molly Goddard Sapporo Ruffle Shoulder Bag, £ 520,

Molly Goddard Sapporo Ruffle Shoulder Bag, £ 520,

The Orion bag (£ 780; is made of nylon ribbon – over 250 yards – and is hand crocheted in the UK. Each bag is unique and made to order. The Sapporo (£ 520) and Nagoya (£ 580) models feature the brand’s signature hand-picked “bump” technique and are made in London. The water-repellent fabric comes from Italy. Last year, Goddard told the FT, “I think I want to stick to my guns and keep making fabric bags. They are really fun to make and more versatile.

For Zofia Chylak, Founder and Creative Director of Warsaw-based luxury bag brand Chylak, creating a collection of woven fabric bags was a challenge that took over a year; it can be difficult to make a large, durable bag. But Chylak is looking to phase out leather from his business (high in leather) due to the environmental impact of extensive cattle ranching, including deforestation, land and water overuse, and emissions. of carbon.

Moiré Chylak Soft Drawstring Bucket Bag, £ 150,

Moiré Chylak Soft Drawstring Bucket Bag, £ 150,

Chylak also claims that many alternatives to vegan leather are “problematic” for the environment because of the amount of plastic they contain. She is currently testing fruit and vegetable-based alternatives to leather, but in the meantime she wanted to make bags that “look nothing like leather” and that are also less harmful to the environment. Moiré is the result, a romantic collection centered on an ancient technique that produces a wavy filigree effect on the fabric embossed by heavy steam-filled rollers. Think of taffeta; thinks Marie-Antoinette.

Moiré was originally used on silk, but that wasn’t going to work for a collection that included a £ 335 oversized ‘dumpling’ clasp bag;, a drawstring bucket bag (£ 150), a shopper and a baggy hobo (both £ 255). After intensive and frustrating research and development, the brand opted for polyester made from 62% recycled ocean plastic.

“Bags are difficult to make sustainably because you have a lot of internals that nobody talks about or cares about, like interfacing,” says Chylak. “It turned out that no one was interfacing in anything green remotely. Everything is made of virgin polyester.

But the collection is not in leather and many of the brand’s customers are happy to have the alternative. “Younger customers asked us if we were planning a leather-free collection,” says Chylak. “So there is a demand.

Prince William County Government: Paper bags will soon be required for yard waste Mon, 23 Aug 2021 15:48:49 +0000

Monday 23 August 2021

As of October 1, the Prince William Landfill Complex at 14811 Dumfries Road and the Balls Ford Road Composting Facility at 13000 Balls Ford Road will no longer accept yard waste in plastic bags.

“Residents can still bring yard waste to the facility, but they can’t throw it in plastic bags,” Prince William County Solid Waste Division spokeswoman Deborah Campbell said. “They will have to empty the plastic bags in the garden bins and throw away or reuse the bags.”

Instead of plastic bags, people can use paper garden waste bags which are readily available at most big box stores, home improvement stores, hardware stores, and some grocery stores. The paper bags break down with the yard waste that the composting facility uses to make compost. Paper bags prevent the facility from separating plastic from yard waste and improve the quality of the compost. “They do their best at the composting facility to try to filter the plastic, but as you can imagine the plastic breaks into small pieces. You can’t get all that plastic out of the end product,” he said. Campbell said.

People can also collect their yard waste in personal containers and dispose of it in yard waste bins at the landfill or composting facility. Waste haulers will collect yard waste in paper yard waste bags or personal containers labeled “yard waste”. Bags and containers should not weigh more than 50 pounds, unless the waste hauler uses mechanical equipment to lift the containers, Campbell said.

The composting facility processes around 6,700 tonnes of garden waste and food each month, or about 80,000 tonnes per year, said Rich Riedel, marketing director of Freestate Farms, the contractor who oversees the facility’s operations. composting for the county. The new yard waste management program is expected to provide up to 15 years of additional life to landfills.

Paper bags are also good for the environment. “Single-use disposable plastics pose a serious and growing threat to fish and wildlife, as well as to the health of the Chesapeake Bay,” said Riedel. “While we take various steps in our facility to dispose of non-compostable items, like plastic bags, the best way to prevent non-compostable items from polluting our community is to not use them in the first place. This helps protect all of the places we use compost – our personal plant and vegetable gardens, local farms and bioretention facilities – landscapes specially designed to reduce water pollution and protect soil quality. Chesapeake Bay Water. “

The new yard waste collection program will run from March to December each year. It also includes the curbside collection of Christmas trees the first two full weeks of January. Diversion of garden waste from the landfill to the composting facility is expected to provide up to 15 years of additional life to the landfill.

This Australia-Based Handbag Company Creates Affordable Italian Leather Bags Mon, 05 Jul 2021 07:00:00 +0000

Vestirsi, the brainchild of ex-Mecca PR manager Monica Tarca, makes luxury Italian leather bags for a fraction of the designer’s price.

Vestirsi Carly, $ 229

“I I wanted a chic, minimalist leather work bag that didn’t cost $ 3,000, ”says Monica. Europe won. “

What she wanted was a bag that looked designer enough to take part in important meetings with founders and CEOs as part of her role in Mecca, but cost “less than $ 300” . Thus, Vestirsi was born.

leather bags

Vestirsi Phoebe, $ 299

The concept behind Vestirsi is to make handbags with the same level of quality and care as designer labels – just without the designer price tag. For this, Monica knew she had to create in Italy.

“Most brands of bags today manufacture in China. We are one of the very few bag brands in Australia that still make their bags in Italy, from Italian leather. Our bags are made in the same suburb as Prada and Gucci, it’s a special leather goods area. where all the most skilled leather craftsmen live and work. So the quality is superb, but what makes us really special I believe is that we sell direct to Australian women and cut the middle man to keep the bags more affordable. “

Vestirsi Katie Petit, $ 299

But Vestirsi’s vision is not just about quality, it is about empowering women. For example, the business is wholly owned and operated by women, and donates 10% of the net profit from each sale to women’s mental health charities – the only fashion brand in Australia to do so, according to Monica.

“Probably because it’s an insane amount and it definitely affects the profitability of the business. But in the end, it’s the right thing to do. Why wouldn’t we want to support other women who need help? It’s a cause very close to my heart. So even though my accountant hates it, it’s a non-negotiable for me. “

Subsequently, the company recently released handbags in two colors, made from cactus leather. Seeing the welcome response from customers inspired the company to continue developing other alternatives such as certified organic corn leather, which will soon be added to the collection.

Miomojo founder Claudia Pievani explained her initial motivation, saying, “I earned a good salary and enjoyed all the pitfalls of success, but still felt that I was not fulfilling my mission. Leather has long been a quality material in the handbag world, but she felt the environmental and animal compromise wasn’t even worth it. “I’ve always been fascinated by fashion, design and beautiful things, but I grew increasingly frustrated that these products often come at the expense of innocent living beings. So she started looking for alternatives that didn’t sacrifice quality, design or animals. “So, I began my personal odyssey of bringing affordable and cruelty-free alternatives to my animal-loving friends, all with Italian sensibility and flair.”

From the start, giving back to animal welfare organizations was essential for Pievani, who had seen moon bears rescued from the bear bile industry during his visit to Animals Asia and witnessed the organization’s efforts. . As a result, Miomojo has donated over $ 200,000 to the organization and also benefits other charities including Mercy for Animals, FOUR PAWS and many agricultural sanctuaries around the world. In total, the company donates 10% of its net profits to animal protection associations and is also a contributing member of 1% for the Planet. Miomojo is currently in the process of becoming a B Certified Company, which recognizes the highest standards of social and environmental performance.

Pievani is happy to see other companies stepping up their efforts to improve sustainable practices, especially those that are helping to redefine what luxury means. “True sustainability is respect,” said Pievani. “Respect for humanity, respect for the environment and animals. Aesthetics and ethics can and must coexist.

But she hasn’t finished pushing the boundaries. By 2022, the company plans to make all of its products from sustainable materials such as recycled fishing nets, glass, plastic bottles and even innovative new materials like coffee grounds. The company is also planning to open its own animal rescue center.

HWant to support local businesses when shopping for mom this Mother’s Day? Consider stopping by Jytte Designs’ first pop-up store on May 2nd. The Detroit-based luxury leather brand sells its products at Coup d’Etat, and you can buy everything from handmade card holders and key chains to clutch bags and backpacks.

La Detroiter Juna Durrant launched Jytte Designs – named after her grandmother Jytte Ulrich – in December 2020. Durrant started sewing leather in 2014 when she made a bag for a friend who was getting married. Since then, she has learned hand-sewing techniques on her own and how to work with leather tools and lacing patterns. When Durrant lost her job during the pandemic, she decided to use her savings and stimulus check to finally pursue her dream of starting her own business.

The result is a range of over 12 leather goods ranging from $ 25 to $ 850. Popular bags include the June Moon Bag, a circular bag that can be worn over the shoulder; Lulu Clutch, an oversized clutch embellished with tassels; and Aurelia Bag, a bucket-style bag with tassels.

Sustainability is a priority for Durrant. To avoid overstock, all of its products are made to order and hand-sewn – Durrant says Jytte Designs is the only Michigan luxury leather brand that does all of its seams with this technique. They’re also made from high-quality materials, like full-grain leather and solid brass hardware, to ensure they look great season after season.

“Jytte Designs customers are very socially minded and aware that they are doing their part to reduce waste,” Durrant said in a press release. “Our handbags are not only hand sewn, but they are constructed with only the highest quality materials, meant to last you a lifetime.”

The pop-up shop will be open from noon to 5 p.m. The pop-up will be an exception to the bespoke model from Jytte Designs, and the products will be available for purchase on site. Coup d’Etat is located at 3044 W. Grand Boulevard. in the New Center neighborhood of Detroit.

“It was a joy to collaborate with new talents like Juna”, says Angela Wisniewski, owner of Coup d’Etat, in a press release. “Her designs and painstaking craftsmanship come together to give moms the ultimate gift that’s beautiful, unique and supports our Detroit design community.”
